Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church
Beautiful cathedral-like structure built in the late 1800’s, serving the Church parish established in 1772 after which Ascension civil parish is named. Originally a mission to serve the growing community of Acadians and evangelize the nearby Native Americans; the largest and one of the most historic cemeteries in the area.
Ascension Parish Courthouse
This Romanesque revival style building was constructed in 1889 with finely detailed brick arches. The adjacent jail predates the courthouse by more than 20 years. Tours provide insight into this area’s significant history.
Atchafalaya Water Heritage Trail Site
This site, Bayou Lafourche at the Mississippi River Junction, is one of the stops on the Atchafalaya Water Heritage Trail. Donaldsonville Riverwalk
Enjoy a relaxing stroll on a brick paved path lined with benches and lights overlooking the Mississippi River. Explore two of the seven Historic Portals to the Past that are located along the levee top at the Riverwalk, as well as the Portal maps that will help guide you to the other 5 panels.
Historic Fort Butler Commemorative Site
