Atchafalaya Water Heritage Trail Site
This site, Bayou Lafourche at the Mississippi River Junction, is one of the stops on the Atchafalaya Water Heritage Trail. Bayou Lafourche was an important passageway for American Indians, principally the Chitimacha tribe. Donaldsonville was established in 1806 atop previous settlements at the confluence of the Mississippi River and Bayou Lafourche to become an important trading post and one of the oldest settlements in the state.
